I didn’t quite know what to expect when I went to see this movie. The previews had talked about a bunch of kids filming a movie when bazaar things start to happen. That was true, but what I had not expected was a movie that borrowed a lot from ET, that was a cross between Star Wars and Nancy Drew, all with the non-stop action and adventure of a Bond flick. The kids in it were wonderful, including great performances from Kyle Chandler and Elle Fanning who both made it look effortless.
The love angle in it was muted, but nicely done. This was not only between the two kids but also between the fathers and their son and daughter respectively. The retro aspect of it was interesting and while it didn’t add or take anything away from the movie, it did provide a little bit of nostalgia to us older folks – not that we were really the targets of this movie. Parents should not have any issues letting their kids enjoy this movie, which does have a few surprising moments, but most of them can be well anticipated.
I think writer-director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg did a good job balancing several aspects of this movie and have made a very entertaining flick, but it will not go onto my favorites list. I would probably watch it again when it comes out on DVD.
