The Gallery Without Walls
Lake Oswego conjures various impressions in people from the Portland area but one thing is very clear as soon as you walk around the downtown area is that they are proud of their community. In summer, there are hanging baskets everywhere, but what is way cool are all of the statues they have everywhere.
Some I don’t care for but others are quite wonderful. They call it “The Gallery Without Walls”. It is of course free and is on display every day of the year, rain or shine. It works in a similar manner to art in a company I used to work for. Artists loan the city their artwork for 2 years and it goes on display somewhere in the city.
Fifteen new ones are added every year, so there is always something different. The collection changes in July. If you want to – you can buy one of them. They are all for sale. The people of Lake Oswego vote on which ones they like and the People’s Choice Winners go into the permanent collection along with others that the City has bought over the years.
They do provide a downloadable pamphlet describing each of the art pieces that you can get from here and in addition they do provide guided tours. Call 503 675 3738 to arrange for a tour.
So take a walk around the city and enjoy the sculpture and then appreciate what the residents of Lake Oswego are providing for us all to enjoy. Thank you Lake Oswego. You can read more about one of the sculpture titled Totem in this blog.
