Portland fountain tour: Animals in Pools
Animals in Pools fountains are located on SW Yamhill Street and Morrison Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. There are 25 of these amazing and wonderful statues in 10 pools located on each side of Pioneer Courthouse, which will be talked about in a future blog.
They were designed by Georgia Gerber and built as part of an improvement project for the MAX Light Rail in 1986. These are just one block away from Pioneer Courthouse Square, which is generally known as the heart of downtown Portland and is a great destination in itself for observing colorful people, catching events, and enjoying a Starbucks coffee or a host of many other treats located nearby.
Animals in Pools are conveniently located near the MAX stations. This makes them very accessible to see and then jump right back on the MAX and continue on your journey.
Animals in Pools are made up of some of the great Northwest most popular wildlife. Bears, otters, ducks, and deer. Each statue is a beautiful life like work of art. They all seem to even have their own personalities! The truly amazing thing about these statues is they are also fountains, with water flowing bubbling around them on all but the frostiest days.
